PSAT PREPARATION (9-11 grade)

Why should I take the PSAT?

Here are the answers you have been looking for.

-The results that you receive from taking the PSAT allow you to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses so that you can better prepare for the SAT and college.

- The PSAT enters you in a competition for scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (grade 11 only)

- You can compare your results to other students who are also applying to college

As you can see, the PSAT is an effective way to practice for the SAT and prepare for your future.

What is on the test?
The test is comprised of 5 sections: two 25 minute critical reading, two 25 minute math, and one 30 minute writing skills.

Critical Reading

  •      13 Sentence completions
  •      35 Critical reading questions

Math

  • 28 Multiple choice questions
  • 10 Student produced responses or grid ins
  • Numbers and operation, algebra and functions,  geometry and measurement, data analysis, probability and statistics

Writing

How should I study?

Practice, practice, practice!  Review your PSAT Student Preparation Book and take the practice tests.  Also, visit the College Board website and complete the PSAT practice questions: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/prep.html .

Most importantly, believe in yourself and do your best.  That is all you can ask for!  Good luck and I have faith that each and every one of you will succeed!

August News:

SAT vs. ACT and How to Prepare

Students, would you like to have more choices for life after high school? Practice, practice, practice to raise your SAT or ACT score and open up a greater variety of four-year college options!

Most four-year universities require the submission of scores from one of these standardized assessments. The difference between the ACT and the SAT is generally described this way: the ACT is curriculum-based (what you have learned), while the SAT is aimed more at general reasoning and problem-solving skills (how you solve problems). Visit your potential colleges’ websites to find out which score is required or preferred.

Performing well is not just dependent on what you know, but also on your ability to understand the test itself and how the questions are presented. This is why advance preparation is important. Fortunately, many resources are available to help. TEACH does offer after school SAT Prep classes for Math and Verbal. Listen to the morning announcements for more information. Also, enter the weekly SAT question contest, where you can win prizes while practicing up for the SAT. Each week new questions will be posted on the School Counseling Office, where you can also pick up an answer sheet and drop off your completed form. Warm up your brains, get thinking, and submit your entries ASAP!

There are also free preparation resources available, for the SAT, through www.collegeboard.com, and for the ACT, through www.actstudent.org (these are also the websites for test registration). Also, many fee-based programs can be found through internet searches.
